How to Use Task Updates and Assignments with Drag & Drop

Introduction

This guide will show you how to update tasks and assign them using drag & drop in Global Resource Management. This feature is useful for quick edits, planning corrections, or adjusting workloads across users. By following these steps, you’ll be able to move and assign tasks with ease and speed.

Target Audience

User

Prerequisites

  • Access to Global Resource Management
  • Proper permissions to view and edit tasks
  • Tasks already assigned in the timeline view

How to Drag & Drop Tasks

Step 1: Open Global Resource Management

  1. Go to Global menu >> Resource Management
  2. Set the timeline to Week or Month for easier visibility
  3. Expand the rows of users or teams you are working with

Step 2: Move a Task in Time

  • Click and hold on a task block in the timeline
  • Drag it left or right to move it to an earlier or later day
  • The task’s start date and due date will update automatically

🛈 Good to know: If you move a task to a day with a reservation or absence ("N"), the system will restrict you from placing it there.

Step 3: Reassign a Task to Another User

  • Click and hold on the task
  • Drag it up or down to another user’s row
  • Release it to assign the task to that user
  • The timeline updates to reflect the new assignee and keeps the same dates

🛈 Tip: Use the skills or roles filters to show only suitable users before reassigning a task.

Step 4: Combine Move and Reassignment

  • Drag a task sideways and vertically
  • This changes both the user and the date range
  • The task will stay within the same project but follow the new planning path

Step 5: Save the Changes

  • A Save button will appear in the top right after changes
  • Click it to confirm all drag & drop modifications
  • If you leave without saving, changes will be lost

Troubleshooting (Optional)

  • Task doesn’t move – You may lack permission or the task is locked
  • Task jumps back – You may be trying to place it on a blocked day (absence or reservation)
  • Reassignment fails – The new user may not be a valid assignee (e.g. task is restricted to roles)

Conclusion

You have successfully updated and reassigned tasks using drag & drop in Resource Management. This method offers a fast and visual way to balance workloads and keep your project timelines accurate.

📌 Note: Most actions described in this article can also be performed in the project-level Resource Management. To access it, go to a specific project and click the "Resource Management" tab. The functionality is almost identical, but it will only display and apply to tasks and users related to that specific project.
