What does air-gapped mean?
An air-gapped system is a computer or network that's physically isolated from the internet and other unsecured networks, with no direct connection to the outside world. This isolation is a security measure meant to protect sensitive data or critical systems from remote attacks.
The name comes from the idea of a literal "gap of air" between the protected system and any external network (there's no cable), Wi-Fi, or other link bridging them.
Air-gapping is commonly used for high-security environments like military systems, industrial control systems, and financial or critical infrastructure. Data can still be moved to or from these systems, but only through physical media such as USB drives, which is also why air gaps aren't completely foolproof.
